Chicago
Woke early, of course, around 5am, could sleep no longer. Beds lovely and comfortable, although very cold at night here. Heating on this morning already. Can imagine it must be bastard cold here in Jan or Feb. Writing this after planning White Sox game this afternoon possibly. Also found a good breakfast place nearby, Caribella, and already hungry (it’s 6.20 now).
The day turned out well – we eventually found Caribella and had breakfast there. It is a lovely place, but the potato frittata may have been a mistake. The bacon was delicious. Went off from there to Logan Square L stop and bought a couple of tickets by asking a kindly ticket guy, who also saved us by shouting and gesticulating from getting on the wrong train. Headed downtown and on to Guaranteed Rate Field to see White Sox play Mariners. Huge numbers of people in lines already at 11.30 for 13.10 start. Why?!! It turned out to be a ‘free hoodie’ for the first 15000 that did it. Went and had a beer hoping crowds would go but had to join long line to get in. Only paid $29 for two tickets but way out in right field. Mariners always in charge, 3 or 4 Home Runs and good value game but cold seeped in to us by the 7th, and we left with Mariners up 7-1. They won 9-1 while we were on train heading back north to Logan Square.
Went back and chilled at apartment – but soon falling asleep so found ‘Small Bar’ just round the corner and had a beer there. Weakest we could find was 6.2% so we had just the one with some food before staggering home knackered again. We have walked 5.3 miles today and we did manage a couple of games of crib and some thoughts about journey to come before we crashed around 10pm. Unfortunately Mick won both games, mostly due to my bad fortune of course.
Early to bed and jet lag combination has resulted in my being awake at 3am, and still awake now at 5.45. Must try to break this cycle or will be falling asleep on the road.
