C1: Sketching Curves

Graph sketching (reciprocal)

C1
Graph sketching (cubic)

Transformations of graphs

At GCSE, you drew straight line graphs (y=mx+c) and quadratic curves (y = x squared). You may have also drawn cubic graphs (y = x cubed) and reciprocal graphs ( y = 1/x). In C1 you will need to know all of these and you will also need to know how to transform graphs. Vertical transformations are sometimes known as OUTSIDE transformations and horizontal transformations are sometimes known as INSIDE transformations.

This work will be extended in C3 when we look at the MODULUS function (where you forget negative signs, e.g. | -3 | = 3. Think about what the graph y = | x | might look like.)
