C1: Quadratic Functions

Quadratics (Discriminant Problems)

Quadratics (Sketching quadratics)

C1

The graph of y = x squared is a QUADRATIC function. It's a bit confusing isn't it because "quad" normally means four so you would expect this to be x to the power of 4. Think of quad bike (4 wheels) quadruplets (4 babies born from one pregnancy) etc. However, the word comes from the Latin word "quadratum" which means square - and a square has four sides.

In this work you are going to learn how to use the quadratic formula to solve equations as well as sketching more complicated graphs.

You are also going to learn about the discriminant - this is a term invented by James Joseph Sylvester
