Chicago IL to Quincy IL 311 Miles
Slept till 5am, a triumph, 7 hours sleep, which will get me feeling better and not so tired later today. At last back to some sort of regular sleeping I hope. We have to get the car this morning at Midway International Airport. Will contact Uber around 9am.
Went to get the car with Uber and had a good chat with driver, a young fella at Med School 4th year, hated Trump, said there’s no chance of him getting in again!! He was a pleasant guy, dropped us at Midway Airport and then we had to be like passengers, taken out to car hire in bus! Why did we choose this place for car hire?! Anyway, it was fine – we have a silver midsize which drives well and we’ve been doing 44 mpg so far. Had a great later breakfast at Burr Ridge, just off Route 55, and took turns to drive 311 miles to Quincy, where we booked an Airbnb this morning. It looked good, and it is good. The woman, Jill, was there to meet us, and showed us round – very quirky odd place, redbrick, lots of space, many rooms, all amenities you could want inc chocolates, sweets, all kinds of shampoos, soaps, 1.5 bathrooms and so on. Looks over a park. I’m in kind of loft, with en suite toilet, up steep staircase. There’s also a huge lounge and dining room with Grandfather clock and all sort of decorative pics on walls. Eclectic is probably the right word for the décor. Still for £92 for the night, it’s brilliant, coffee machine, tea, biscuits, chocolates, sweets – Mick’s having a field day!
Walked couple of miles into town, it’s 41000 population, and it wasn’t pretty. Lots of industry, mostly down by the Mississippi. We walked along the river to a bar and settled there. A woman running it alone, we sat outside with a strong beer called Elysian, and then decided to eat too. Fish n Chips for me, delicious. Good to be in shorts again – 27C here and still warm as we walked back in the dark at 8.30. Played some crib, Mick won final game so it’s now 2-3. Booked an airbnb for tomorrow night in Joplin MO – it looks great at £61, so even better value we hope. Asleep around 10.30.
