Crestline CA to Templeton CA 309 Miles
Left around 10 am as ‘the woman who does’ arrived. Mick drove along some wide but bendy routes down through the mountains and we emerged with the greater LA region in front of us. The we pressed on, taking regular turns, before we tried to get brunch in N Los Angeles and failed. The world and his brother were out to Sunday lunch, it seemed, and we tried a really posh place without joy, so settled for a sandwich and Danish from a grocery store.. Finally got through Los Angeles and onto the 101 to Ventura and then Carpinteria, where we stopped and revisited old haunts for coffee and a break. Headed north again and arrived at Templeton, a small town off the highway. The Airbnb is as good as any we’ve had, a beautiful house with lots of space, 2 bathrooms, two large and one smaller bedroom, lovely lounge with huge TV, etc etc. Mick’s gone upstairs and I’m down – no problem tonight with heating – it’s fantastic, Anja’s place.
We walked into town and bought one bottle of beer between us! Walked a little along railway line, then came back and watched baseball, Braves beating Brewers. This town is neat and tidy with almost no industry apart from a grain mill along by the rail line which runs through the town. It has about 15 or 20 shops inc several bars and one gunstore. Presumably most people go elsewhere to work. It would certainly be a Trump supporting town, with opinions far from the politics of San Francisco or the East Bay I suspect.
I called Carylon this evening and she was dead keen for us to come up tomorrow so we decided to do that rather than have another night elsewhere. Then we played Crib with me 11-5 down and needing two wins. First game was going well, 20 points up after 2 hands, and then started to dry up. At the death we both had two to win, and Mick won it on pegging as I played an ace instead of a ten at 19, which would have won it for me – he had an ace for 2 pts!!! Jammy bastard! Next game he had hands of 12, 20, 14, 12 and then 16, while at same time I couldn’t score a point with all six cards in some rounds! Needless to say, after we were level after one hand and box each, he won by around 55 points, almost lapping me. I’ve never known someone so good at cribbage (ie jammy!). Seriously, it will stop me sleeping tonite, for a change, or maybe it will be the thing that makes me sleep for once. Luckily it’s only a game, not real life, and I wish him all the best and congratulate him on his success, as good sportsmen should. And had it been the other way around I know that he would be magnanimous and gracious in defeat …
So off up Highway One for a spell tomorrow and thus the long route to Clayton – 5 more hours of driving.
