Carpenteria to Clayton CA -- 342 Miles
Had a lie-in today, awake at 3.45 but slept again till 6.30. Lovely hotel, but we only used it to sleep here. Left at 8am to find a breakfast place called ‘Worker Bee’. The guy there was terrific, served us a huge full breakfast which lifted spirits a lot.
Got on the road around 9am and left this beautiful town in perfect spring sunshine, me driving. Found 101 North easily and headed for the Bay Area. Easy drive, traffic busy but no hold ups, took plenty of stops, drove through the central valley and saw lots of Hispanic workers bent double in fields picking fruit. Beautiful weather, temps outside getting up to 80s. Drove through San Jose on freeway, saw little of the city. Stopped for coffee and a cake snack in Salinas, where Mick has spent time during ‘volcano’ trip some years back.
Arrived in Clayton around 4.45pm, Carylon delighted to see us. She cooked delicious ravioli dish with cauliflower cheese, we drank some wine and talked and laughed until she left at 10pm. She couldn’t find a house key! We discussed lots of stuff re the book and her time at Oakmeeds as well as teaching generally. Lovely evening but very tired by 9pm. Eventually settled in and asleep by 11, only to be up again at 4.30.
Looking forward to this evening, when we meet the gang in Ed’s. Spoke briefly to Megan on Skype yesterday from Carpinteria, but have to Facetime her today to get the full story of her trip to Ghana.
