2016 day 7

El Paso to Casa Grande   384 miles

Awake by 3am and writing by 5am as unable to sleep! Drove from 8.30, but not an easy day for driving. I was slightly hungover and hazy, it was a bit chilly.  Went off the road to see Mesilla, lovely town, mostly still closed at 9am but found one guy selling smelly stuff with burners to set it off. He was very chatty, we ended up buying some of his gear, then found a cafe open. Mick cruelly told me the toilet was out of action and fooled me into going through the kitchen to find a gardener at work to ask him where the bathroom was. He of course thought I must be retarded when he showed me the place I needed!! I suppose I had just told him the kitten April Fool joke from many years before.

When Mick drove after I’d done 100 we immediately hit an accident and were stationary for an hour and a half near Lordsburg. That place turned out to be a ghost town on the lines of Garden City (2012) Kansas. Stopped for late lunch at a crap Denny’s before Tucson, then pressed on through Tucson and on to Casa Grande, where we found the Holiday Inn, near historic town centre.

Walked down to a great bar where beers were upwards of 7% alcohol, (and we were already knackered) Played pool with a strong pint, Mick won again, this time 2-1, and then went back to eat at the hotel. Another beer and then we were beaten for lack of sleep. Came through mountains and plains with lots of sand blowing across road, weather changeable but mostly fine and sunny.  Came through another time zone change
