Saturday 26th march
Fort Lauderdale FL to Gainesville, FL 330 miles
Headed north up coast. Stopped soon to walk on golden sandy beach looking for a coffee shop; failed to find somewhere overlooking the ocean. Hot, humid day, cars streaming with water from humidity earlier when we got up. Hit Highway 1 and tried A1A, but still no good views of the ocean. Frustrated, having hoped to drive along the front looking out to sea, we got onto I-95 and headed north for real! Made a bit of a detour to groan at houses in Ocean Boulevard, Palm Springs, found 1100, Ocean Boulevard South, home of Donald Trump, and vomited at the opulence and luxury of these mansions. 24 billionaires live in Palm Springs.
Found a Walgreens in Boynton Beach and bought a cap – it’s hot and I forgot to bring one! Also bought some sunscreen. Eventually found a lovely small town called Lake Worth, had coffee there, then carried on to find the Florida Toll Road, which led us near I-95 and north towards Gainesville, where we arrived at 5pm. Checked into Holiday Inn, looks great, good room, pool outside on 4th floor! Went into town to eat at Harry’s – delicious chicken dish with sauce, Mick had CCS (chicken Caesar salad) Walked back at 8 and went into bar next to/with hotel. Had two strong beers and were buggered, tired, asleep by 10.
